A little background... Farm Girl: Was born on an Iowa farm with a hayseed instead of a silver spoon in my mouth. Avid Reader: My grandmother, previously a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse, taught me to love story by reading Whitman's Tiny Tales, published in 1949. Puff's Vegetable Garden, Jackie's Airplane Ride, Animal Parade, Steve the Steam Shovel, Plush, and Rover became my intimate friends. Today I resonate with creative nonfiction authors Mary Clearman Blew, Judy Blunt, Ivan Doig, Sy Montgomery, Leslie Marmon Silko, and many, many more. Creative Writer: In junior high my English teacher scrawled in red ink across my assignment, "this sounds like it was written by someone who doesn't speak English." I'd substitute words in my essay from a thesaurus. In high school I won a writing contest after submitting a eulogy about my brother--he'd just left for college. Over the next thirty years I continued to write, earned an MFA in creative nonfiction, and became a Midwestern Regionalist, a travel memoirist, and a survivorship story writing enthusiast. Writing Coach: I've mentored writers from all walks--individuals with mental illness, cancer survivors, Native American youth, refugee students, at-risk adolescents, and those spiritually renewed and inspired. Sojourner: I'm on a journey, have traveled the world, my quest a constant mission to learn. My heart remains grounded in the Midwest, and today reside in the pothole prairies of South Dakota where the grasses whisper and the winds shout. Join me as I migrate through time in this place, in a rare prairie remnant where beauty abounds.
